Why is my roof turning Black?
The Stains that seem to be overtaking roofs are not caused by pollution, defective shingles, airplanes or trees. It is a specific form of roof algae called Gloeocapsa Magma and its spores travel by wind which is why it is common to see on roofs.
In recent years changes in shingle construction has also contributed to the problem. Most shingles are now made with a layer of fiberglass in them vs. being a solid asphalt shingle. When the fiberglass was added to the shingle, manufacturers began adding limestone to the composition of the shingle to increase its weight.
